As a result of the German energy transition („Energiewende“), efficient and robust designs of electromechanical energy converters, in particular electrical machines, are becoming increasingly important, whether as drives or components in the automotive industry, in industrial automation or in household appliances. Research about this topic is part of the BMBF PASIROM project and deals with modeling, simulation and robust optimization of electrical machines. Particularly the efficient time-parallel simulation of the models, e.g. using the Parareal approach, is investigated. Parallelization in the time domain is of a particular interest especially in the cases when electric motors are supplied with a pulse-width modulated voltage of a high frequency, e.g., of a couple of tens of kHz. This leads to problems which involve discontinuous right-hand sides and requires special techniques for their numerical solution. A novel Parareal algorithm, based on a reduction of the coarse dynamics by using a smooth low-frequency excitation, has been recently introduced. Its convergence analysis and application to an induction machine model shows efficiency of the approach for the real-life demands in electrical engineering.
